She is the daughter of Harvey Welker a Native American father and Julie Welker an African-American mother. Her father works in engineering while her mother works as an estate agent. Walker was educated through The Germantown Friends School (Germantown Area) in Philadelphia where she graduated in 1994. After graduating at Harvard College in 1998, she enrolled at Harvard College and earned her bachelor of Arts. Welker married John Hughes in Philadelphia, who was known as a marketing director.
